The Northrop Grumman X-47B is a US aerial unmanned combat aircraft whose first flight took place in 2011. The X-47 project started as part of the J-UCAS program under the projects developed by DARPA ; Being part of the UCAS-D (Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration) United States Navy program. This project aims to create and operate an unmanned aerial vehicle based on aircraft carriers.
The US Navy has undertaken UCAV practical efforts since 2000, when it awarded service contracts worth US $ 2 million each, to Boeing and Northrop Grumman for a 15-month concept-exploration program. Design considerations for a naval UCAV included with corrosive seawater environment, deck handling for launch and recovery, integration with command and control systems and operation in a high electromagnetic interference environment for aircraft carriers.
